BALTIMORE, MD (Sunday, March 6, 2021) – Tomorrow,  at  10:00AM,  Councilmembers  Zeke Cohen,  Phylicia Porter,  Odette Ramos,  and  James Torrence  will announce  upcoming  legislation  and  resolutions  to  address  illegal  dumping and trash concerns in Baltimore City. The event will be followed by a socially-distanced community clean-up at 1627 Spruce St, attended by residents and council staff.

The coalition of Councilmembers formed as an increasing number of Baltimore City residents cite illegal dumping as a growing concern. In a recent hearing on the 311 service, trash concerns were listed as one of the most common kinds of reports made in the system.

“These bills and resolutions aren’t just about reducing illegal dumping, but increasing opportunities for small haulers and community to do the right thing,” said Councilmember Zeke Cohen. “We all deserve to live in a beautiful, clean Baltimore.”

”I am grateful to my colleagues for showing up for District 10’s Curtis Bay. As others across Baltimore City can attest, illegal dumping of bulk trash items is a serious issue in our neighborhoods,” Said Councilmember Phylicia Porter. “We have got to make it easier for Baltimore City residents to reuse and repurpose our City’s waste. Small Haulers are already doing this work every day, but by incentivizing the work they do, we're empowering these 'Environmental Entrepreneurs' to be able to relieve some of the pressure on the City's existing systems.”

“Trash and illegal dumping continues to be an issue in our city. I’m tired of seeing it on our streets and in our neighborhoods. I am happy that members of the Council and community members are coming together to combat this problem and we are working together to create solutions, ” said Councilmember Odette Ramos.

“Collectively, we recognize that illegal dumping is a systemic issue that spans beyond artificial boundaries. I am looking forward to our informational hearing in which our agencies will outline their processes for addressing illegal dumping, current challenges, and ways to improve the City’s response,” said Councilmember James Torrence. ”My office is working with responsible agencies to pursue legislation to address the illegal dumping of demolition and renovation material.”
